Welsh Rugby Union player Hone banned for four years

Welsh Rugby Union player Carl Hone has been banned from all sport for a period of four years following a first Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) for the Presence of a banned substance in his Sample.

UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) collected an Out-of-Competition urine Sample from Mr Hone on 6 February 2020 at a Llanhilleth RFC training session. Analysis of Mr Hone’s A Sample returned Adverse Analytical Findings (AAFs) for boldenone and its metabolite.

Boldenone is listed under section S1.1 of the 2020 WADA Prohibited List as an Anabolic Androgenic Steroid when administered exogenously. Boldenone is a non-Specified Substance and is prohibited at all times.

On 12 October 2020, UKAD issued Mr Hone with a Notice of Charge and a Provisional Suspension. Mr Hone admitted the charge but claimed that the finding was the result of contamination from inadvertent contact with animal waste during his work as a carpenter.

The case was therefore referred to the independent National Anti-Doping Panel (NADP) for a hearing. The NADP considered Mr Hone’s case and on 6 May 2021 concluded that he had not successfully established the source of boldenone in his Sample. The NADP issued Mr Hone with a four-year ban from sport, the start of which was backdated to 6 February 2020 and will expire at midnight on 5 February 2024.

Speaking on the case, UKAD Director of Operations Pat Myhill said: “Boldenone has no place in sport and is not safe for human consumption.

“Athletes should be very concerned about the risks to their health and career when using anabolic steroids to cut corners. They should seriously consider if it is worth risking a ban from sport and suffering significant damage to their health in the future.”
