British Lacrosse player Ryan Sweetman receives three-year ban for Anti-Doping Rule Violations

British Lacrosse player Ryan Sweetman has been banned from all World Anti-Doping Code-compliant sport for three years, following Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) for the Presence and Use of a Prohibited Substance or its Metabolites or Markers.

On 7 April 2025, UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) collected a urine Sample from Mr Sweetman, Out-of-Competition, at his home address. Analysis of Mr Sweetman’s Sample returned Adverse Analytical Findings (AAFs) for two Metabolites of GW0742: GW0742-sulfone and GW0742-sulfoxide.

GW0742 (a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta (PPARᵟ) agonist) falls within Section S4.4 of the WADA 2025 Prohibited List as a metabolic modulator. GW0742 is a non-Specified Substance that is prohibited at all times.

UKAD notified Mr Sweetman of his AAFs and imposed a Provisional Suspension. Mr Sweetman responded by admitting both ADRVs, stating that his Use of GW0742 had not been intentional. Mr Sweetman stated that an acquaintance at his gym had given him a pre-workout product containing GW0742. He claimed he was unaware the substance was prohibited.

UKAD subsequently charged Mr Sweetman with ADRVs for the Presence of a Prohibited Substance or its Metabolites or Markers; and Use of a Prohibited Substance or a Prohibited Method. Mr Sweetman admitted the ADRVs and accepted the asserted period of Ineligibility within twenty days. On the basis of his early admission, Mr Sweetman was able to reduce his period of Ineligibility from four to three years.

Mr Sweetman’s ban is deemed to have begun on 16 May 2025 (the date of the Provisional Suspension) and will expire at 11:59pm on 15 May 2028.
