British BMX rider Matthew Hutt receives six-year ban for Anti-Doping Rule Violations

British BMX rider Matthew Hutt has been banned from all World Anti-Doping Code-compliant sport for six years following Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) for the Presence and Use of four Prohibited Substances and/or Metabolites.

UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) collected a first urine Sample from Mr Hutt at the BMX National Series held in Birmingham on 7 July 2024. UKAD collected a second urine Sample from Mr Hutt at his home address on 25 July 2024.

Analysis of Mr Hutt’s first urine Sample returned an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) for testosterone and testosterone Metabolites of non-endogenous origin, compatible with the exogenous administration of testosterone. Analysis of Mr Hutt’s second urine Sample returned AAFs for nandrolone and drostanolone and their Metabolites, as well as Metabolites of metandienone.

Each of testosterone, nandrolone, drostanolone, and metandienone are anabolic steroids that are non-Specified Substances and prohibited at all times in sport.

UKAD notified Mr Hutt that he may have committed ADRVs for the Presence and Use of Prohibited Substances and imposed a Provisional Suspension on him. Despite numerous attempts by UKAD to contact Mr Hutt, no response to the notice was received. UKAD therefore proceeded to charge Mr Hutt with both ADRVs and asserted that a six-year period of Ineligibility should apply. In UKAD’s assessment, there were ‘Aggravating Circumstances’ (namely, the Presence and Use of four anabolic steroids) which justified an increase to the standard period of Ineligibility that would otherwise apply.

Mr Hutt did not respond to the Charge Letter. In accordance with Article 7.11.4 of the UK Anti-Doping Rules (ADR), Mr Hutt was deemed to have admitted the ADRVs charged and to have acceded to the Consequences specified in the Charge Letter (to include a six-year period of Ineligibility).

UKAD received information that, whilst subject to a Provisional Suspension, Mr Hutt delivered coaching sessions to other BMX riders, in breach of the prohibition against participation. Given his failure to respect the terms of his Provisional Suspension, Mr Hutt’s six-year period of Ineligibility commenced on 15 August 2025 (the date of the decision in his case) and will expire at 11:59pm on 14 August 2031.

Technical terms and more information

The first urine Sample was analysed in accordance with the procedures set out in WADA’s International Standard for Laboratories and detected a testosterone/epitestosterone ratio of 50.42. As a result, the first urine Sample underwent further analysis by way of Gas Chromatography/ Combustion/ Isotope-Ratio Mass Spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS) to determine the origin of the testosterone detected.

The results of the GC/C/IRMS confirmed an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) for testosterone and testosterone Metabolites (etiocholanolone; 5β-androstane-3α,17β-diol; and androsterone) of non-endogenous origin, compatible with the exogenous administration of testosterone.

Analysis of the second urine Sample returned AAFs for the following Prohibited Substances and/or Metabolites:

  • a) metandienone Metabolites:
    • 6β-Hydroxy-metandienone;
    • 17α-Methyl-5β-androstane-3α,17β-diol;
    • 17β-Hydroxymethyl,17α-methyl-18-nor-androst-1,4,13-trien-3-one;
    • 17β-Methyl-5β-androst-1-ene-3α,17α-diol (Epimetendiol); and
    • 17-epimetandienone
  • b) nandrolone (19-nortestosterone)
  • c) nandrolone Metabolites:
    • 19-Norandrosterone; and
    • 19-Noretiocholanolone
  • d) drostanolone
  • e) drostanolone Metabolites:
    • 3α-Hydroxy-2α-methyl-5α-androstan-17-on
