2027 World Anti-Doping Code: A new Code, shaped by Athletes
UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) has released guidance on the major changes included in the 2027 World Anti-Doping Code (the Code). The new Code will replace the 2021 version as of 1 January 2027.
The Code, along with nine International Standards, protect Athletes’ rights to participate in clean sport and ensure consistency in anti-doping programmes globally. Athletes, Athlete Support Personnel, national governing bodies (NGBs), and everyone involved in sport should familiarise themselves with the upcoming changes.
Some of the changes in the 2027 Code include:
- Stronger protections for Athletes and Athlete rights - The Code now further reinforces and emphasises human rights, centred around Athlete-wellbeing. This evolution recognises Athletes as people, not just competitors.
- Stronger governance measures and evidence-based investigations - The 2027 Code strengthens decision-making and investigations, helping ensure cases are handled consistently. There will also be more scrutiny of decisions to close cases.
- Greater protection for Minors and Protected Persons - New measures for these specific groups will provide greater support during the Sample collection process. There will also be increased scrutiny of adults working with young Athletes.
- A more proportionate approach to sanctioning - Where Athletes face Consequences for the commission of an anti-doping rule violation (ADRV), the Code allows greater flexibility in applying sanctions, recognising different degrees of Fault, and the specific circumstances of the case, including the existence of ‘Contaminated Sources’.
- More incentives for cooperation and resolving cases early - The 2027 Code further encourages cooperation and early resolution, helping cases move through the anti-doping process quicker and smoother.
- Other changes to note - Whereabouts requirements, streamlined processes for Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) recognition and changes in the Sample collection process.
