Protecting the Right to Enjoy Doping-Free Sport

Mobile-Enhanced Global DRO now available for athletes

Athletes can now check their medications when out and about thanks to the new mobile-enhanced website for Global Drug Reference Online, Global DRO.

Global DRO provides athletes and support personnel with information about the prohibited status of specific substances under the rules of sport based on the current World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List, for products sold in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.

Following a successful collaboration between national anti-doping organisations from Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, the mobile-enhanced Global DRO launched on Wednesday. The new tool makes Global DRO more accessible, responding to the ever-growing popularity of accessing information through mobile media.

This is one of many proposed new phases of Global DRO, demonstrating the anti-doping community’s commitment to continually improving this service with partners striving to make it truly global. Data for the UK version of Global DRO will now be sourced from Martindale: The Complete Drug Reference. An agreement was signed with Pharmaceutical Press enabling the leading publisher to update medicines and their ingredients more efficiently than ever via the Global DRO website.

Pharmaceutical Press are the publishing division of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. They will be the sole provider of medical brand data to UK Anti-Doping which will be feed into Global DRO in the UK.

Andy Parkinson, UK Anti-Doping Chief Executive, said: “These two developments will further establish the Global DRO website as a valuable, reliable tool for checking medications for athletes and their support staff. Pharmaceutical Press is a leading provider of authoritative pharmaceutical information used throughout the world, and will no doubt prove an invaluable partner in supporting athletes.

“However, all athletes are reminded that you cannot check supplements through Global DRO. We encourage anyone considering taking supplements to assess the need, assess the risk and consult the Informed-Sport programme.”
