UK Anti-Doping, the national anti-doping organisation, has approached the national governing bodies of sports across the UK, the Home County Sports Councils and other bodies to invite them to comment on the World Anti-Doping Code as part of the 2013 Code Review process.
Since it entered into force in January 2004, the Code has provided the framework for harmonised anti-doping policies, rules and regulations within sport organisations and among public authorities across the world.
The current version of the Code has been in effect since 2009, with an updated and revised version to be agreed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Foundation Board in late 2013 at the Fourth World Conference on Doping in Sport in Johannesburg, South Africa. Over the next two years, WADA will be conducting a detailed consultation exercise aimed at further enhancing the Code. Throughout the revision process, WADA encourages comments and suggestions, from both its stakeholders and all those who want clean and fair sport to benefit the global community of athletes.
The consultation provides stakeholders with the opportunity to contribute constructively to the improvement of the Code. As a signatory to the Code, UK Anti-Doping will be working with WADA throughout the course of this review and has approached UK sporting stakeholders to provide comments on the current Code which they feel merit review and revision. UK Anti-Doping will submit its initial comments to WADA by 15 March 2012.
UK Anti-Doping Chief Executive Andy Parkinson said: “This is a unique opportunity for those involved in sport to have their say in how the World Anti-Doping Code is shaped and enhanced for the future.
“We will put forward a detailed submission on those areas we believe warrant review and we will include any input provided by stakeholders. We have a shared commitment to anti-doping in the UK, and their assistance is vital to ensure we maximise this important global tool that protects the right of athletes to compete in doping-free sport.”
UK Anti-Doping welcomes comments and suggestions for revision of the Code from any interested person. Comments should be sent to codereview@ukad.org.uk and must be received before 17 February 2012 in this phase of the consultation.
