A Doping Control Officer and athlete during a test
You may not have experienced a drugs test in sport yet, but if you continue to develop your talent then you may be tested in the next couple of years.
Drug-testing is one of the main ways that UK Anti-Doping underpins an athlete's achievements as clean.
By being tested there can be no questions. It proves that an athlete has the right to be proud that all their hard work, dedication and determination, has made them the athlete they are.
Being tested for the first time can be slightly daunting. Always remember that you can take someone with you if you are chosen to be tested.
What happens during the doping control procedure?
Tests are carried out by trained people known as Doping Control Officers.
They will:
- Come and tell you that you need to undertake a drugs test
- Chaperone you to the drug testing area, referred to as the Doping Control Station.
- Collect a urine sample from you – you will have to pee in front of the Doping Control Officer who will be the same gender as you
- Ask you to seal your sample into a container and check that your sample is closed securely
- Confirm your sample is suitable to be analysed in the lab
- Ask you to sign some paperwork. You will have a copy to take away with you.
